Ok, well I have uploaded the latest beta gameboy version of the game we love soo much (Broomsticks, duh ^-^).
Paul, I'd like to see your opinions on the fan game too ^-^ So, if you get a chance...?

    Okies, bye peoples,
    -Matt

    Very cool. :-)

On my computer, it is hard to get the player off the ground (physics are too fast). Did you see my post way back when about using elapsed time for the simulation?

  • Comments: Hello I think there should be like some sort of online tournament for the broomsticks game that'd be kool

Yeah, that would be cool. A while back I started working on a networked version of Broomsticks. If I have time I will look into it again.

One problem with a networked version of this game is that this kind of game will be very sensitive to network latency (lag).

All Harry Potter fans: check out the TWWN Forum. Hope to see some more of you there!

Could you dig up the networked version and let us try it out?

I don't suppose you could lend me the broomsicks source code?

    That would be nice. :-)

I dug it up a month ago or so but it didn't seem to work. I will look into it again.

Sorry, but I don't give out the source.

I'll see what I can do.

Even if it does work, a networked version of this game may not play that well. The players change direction very quickly which makes the game very sensitive to lag.

Chances are that you do not have an OpenGL driver installed for your graphics card. What does it say in the console.log file?

That would be a whole new game. I hardly have time to keep this one going. :-)

This probably means that you do not have Java installed for OPERA. Go to the opera website and I'm sure there will be information there about downloading and installing Java support.

It is also possible that Java is installed but disabled. Try looking through the settings to see if there is a place where you can turn Java on.

  • Comments: I've read a bit on the network version of broomsticks, and I can't help but wonder...

Is it a rumor, or the real deal?
(...please be real, please be real, please be...)

    ^-^ Ok.
Oh, I found what you said about implementing a fixed frame rate. I'm not entirely sure if The Game Maker will accept such an equasion, but, here's hoping!
    ^-^

    -Matt

It is halfway between a rumor and the real deal. I started on a networked version a year ago or so. I wasn't too happy with it and didn't have the time to work on it. People are asking me to dig it up and try it again, which is something that I am considering.

There are some technical problems with making this work well through a Java applet (in a browser), so don't expect too much. :-) One solution would be to make a standalone application for the game, but I may not get to that...

Yeah, I don't know what Game Maker does. Let me know how it goes...

I am almost done with another game called Chaser Practice. There will also be a Keeper Practice and possibly a Beater Practice game. A Seeker Practice game could be a bit difficult to do but I'll try.

    Larrin,

I agree that 3D games are more realistic. However, they are about 10 times as much work and not necessarily more fun to play. :-)

Having said that, I would still like to develop Broomsticks3D. However, I'm considering Broomsticks2 because I have a bunch of ideas and it would not take me that long...

Yeah, stupid JAVA. I still think there may be some way around it though...

Well, either way I can't wait to see Broomsticks 2, if it gets made. I'm sure it took a pretty long time to complete Broomsticks.

Would you be updating the code and gameplay significantly, or actually starting from scratch all over again?

    -Matt

I would start all over, but I would keep some of the gameplay, mainly the flight physics. That way, the game would feel familiar.

  • Comments: Oh god, didn't I just sound snobby in my last post, "if it gets made."

    *laughs*

Ok, I didn't mean to sound so stuck up then ^-^

Now you said you could "have more boxes for each character in the image file, so that more interesting things could be done"... Like, emulated animation or something? (I must give up on the animated thing!)

    -Matt

Exactly. Right now there are only 4 boxes per player: left rising, left falling, right rising, right falling. I could make it so that for each of those, there could be several boxes so that the character is animated even when the direction does not change.

  • Comments: I know your probably getting annoyed with all these suggestions because your not even sure if you will make a Broomsticks2 but if you do make a Broomsticks2 you should make a feature so that the background of the playing field could "move". Like for the sky you could have the clouds moving or birds flying by.

Or is this already possible on Broomsticks?

Ah, that would be very cool. That is not possible right now.

This could be done with layers. There could even be a layer that is in front of everything else, such as clouds that you can hide behind. :-)

  • Comments: I found the problem (it was on another computer) and it is OpenGl. I can't download it, I have Windows 2000 Pro. Is there any other way I could get this to work?

The way to get OpenGL is to find out what graphics card you have and then go to that website and get the newest drivers. To find out what card you have, right click on the desktop, then select Properties->Settings. Under the picture of the monitor it will show you what card you have.
